Camp Windjammer
An amazing adventure awaits your campers as they explore the coastal waters of Maine. Our Captains are happy to work with you to plan an experience tailored to your group. Build camaraderie, discover marine habitats, practice navigation, study the heavens and learn new skill sets – all while having a new and exciting adventure!
Having youth groups and campers on board is one of our favorite things to do! Our crew is energized as they share their world with eager first time sailors.
In the early 1930s, our founder Frank Swift was working with Maine camp groups. Fascinated by the pulpwood schooners in nearby Bucksport, Frank arranged a charter to take his campers sailing.
With straw in the holds for bedding they were off for a weeklong adventure. This cruise became an annual event and was the highlight of the summer for everyone at the camps.
His memories of sailing with his campers were so enjoyable; he thought others might be willing to pay for the experience. What if he got a schooner and instead of hauling freight, carried people on cruises along the Maine coast? In 1936, Maine Windjammer Cruises was born. The broad decks of our National Landmark schooners Grace Bailey and Mercantile continue to bring joy to the guests of Maine Windjammer Cruises just as they have since 1939 and 1945, respectively.
