The Best Shakedown Ever

The Mercantile started her 100th year off in grand style.  I believe this year's Shakedown was one of the best ever!  The crew worked well together, the passengers were a great mix and the weather could not have been better.

Schooner Mercantile Departing Camden HarborWith Captain Steve at the helm we left Camden Harbor under sunny skies  and were greeted by a stiff breeze as we left the outer harbor.  We had a picture perfect sail among the islands and headed for Pulpit Harbor for our evenings anchorage.

Approaching the harbor we were treated to our first sighting of the year of the Pulpit Rock Ospreys in their magnificent nest. "Pulpit Rock, on whose peak perches an enormous and well-inhabited osprey nest,

in use for more than two centuries, sheltering one of the oldest families in Maine. This nest has been tended by successive generations of vigorous leaseholders, each faithfully repairing and improving its inheritance" - Quote from THE EDGE OF MAINE by Geoffrey Wolff

Settling in for the evening we were able to watch the sun set behind the Camden  Hills as the moon rose over North Haven Island.  The feeling was so serene you began to believe that it is possible to have it all!

Morning brought clear skies and mirror calm, the surface of the water only disturbed by three hearty swimmers,  our first of the season, the cook, Camden and two passengers Jeff and Brandon.  No one stayed in long but they certainly had a refreshing story to tell their friends.

Saturday  was another great day of sailing, enjoying our fellow passengers and drinking in the beauty of our surroundings.

We arrived at our anchorage in plenty of time for those who chose, to take a leisurely  hike on Warren Island before dinner.

Sunday morning arrived all too soon.  After a hearty breakfast of quiche, sweet potato fries, fruit and muffins it was anchors aweigh and back to Camden Harbor.

The Preseason has been full of great passengers, celebrations  and wonderful sailing.  As we begin our Summer Sailing Season we look forward to welcoming even more passengers aboard for one of the most unique sailing adventures available. We hope to see you aboard!
