1936 - Capt. Frank Swift trades cargo for passengers
During the early years of the Twentieth Century, the Golden Age of Sail was in rapid decline. Tall masts and billowing white canvas were disappearing from the horizon only to be replaced by the smoke stacks of modern steamships. Those hard working sailing ships shared a romance unlike any other mode of transportation or commerce.

Thoughts of sailing a tall ship would sound good to anyone, but to Frank Swift, a young boy, it was enchanting. He had spent hours fantasizing about a life under sail, especially while in his grandmother's attic going through a sea chest that had belonged to his great uncle, a harpooner aboard a whaler in the 1840s.
Many sailing vessels found their way Down East, where a strong tradition of coastal trading in cargo schooners was still being carried on. During his teenage years, Frank worked summers in Maine, counseling at Camp Wigwam in South Waterford. Each year as an adventure outing, the camp chartered one of these old coasters for two weeks. They threw straw down in the cargo hold for bedding and put a curtain down the middle, boys on one side, girls on the other. For Swift and for the campers this was always the highlight of summer.
When Frank decided to go to sea, he became a cadet on the New York State school ship Newport, a formal sailing vessel of the U.S. Navy. After training and at the age of 20, he became an able bodied seaman, shipping out with the Barber Line. He was quartermaster aboard a steamship headed to the British Crown Colony of Hong Kong.

Perhaps there was something he needed that he couldn't find aboard the steamship, for at the end of that trip, he turned down an offer to go as boatswain and returned to Maine. In 1935 with his new bride, he built a camp at Toddy Pond in East Orland. It was the Depression, and they were struggling to make ends meet. During that first cold winter, the idea of windjammer cruises took root.
Seeing the pulpwood schooners unloading in Bucksport, Maine, Frank wondered if he could get one, but instead of carrying cargo, he would carry passengers on Maine coastal cruises. He thought that offering sailing vacations on these venerable old ships would give the average citizen the opportunity to sail Maine's beautiful coastline and share the romance of the sea he loved so much.
Frank discussed the plan with his good friend Capt. Parker Hall, who suggested he charter the schooner Mabel from Deer Isle to try out his idea. She was a stout little schooner in service since launching at Milbridge, Maine in 1881. Swift contacted Capt. William Shepard of Deer Isle who liked the idea and agreed to go as captain with his wife as cook. And so it was, in the year 1936, Frank Swift began offering his "Windjammer Cruises". Three lady passengers from Boston were aboard for his first official sail at the cost of $35 per week.

Later that season, Swift chartered the Lydia M. Webster, built in 1882 in Castine, Maine. During his second season, Capt. Swift offered his windjammer cruises aboard both vessels. Business was picking up slowly, but he began to question if this could really be a profitable business. He decided to give it one more year and added one more vessel to his fleet, the Anne F. Kimball, launched in 1886 at Boothbay.
She was the first vessel he owned outright. He operated his third season with all three vessels as Maine Windjammer Cruises® from Camden, and business took hold. Additional income allowed him to advertise, but the majority of the business, as today, came from word of mouth. For 25 years Capt. Swift operated more than a dozen vessels, saving them from an early demise as the era of cargo schooners came to an end.
